Volume 6

Longtime, no blog. In honour of my last hometown show playing with Grim Fandango, I feel like doing some nerdy shit and posting a bunch of songs that have definitely influenced my bass playing in Grim, some obvious, some not so. Hope you get a kick out of these.

Gang Of Four - Not Great Men: You don't need a lot of notes to play a tight, catchy as fuck groove.

The Clash - Magnificent Seven: More rad funk-punk from one of the greatest punk bassists Paul Simonon.

Ramones - Judy Is A Punk : Dee Dee is my hero. Downstrokes baby.

Minutemen - Glory Of Man: Mike Watt is pretty much the only bassist that makes me wanna play with my fingers, I still probably never will.

Descendents - Myage: Learning Descendents basslines was one of my favourite hobbies in my late teens and they've stuck with me ever since.

New Order - Age Of Consent: The lead guitar riffs in this song are basically the bass riffs I use in 50% of our songs.

Duran Duran - The Reflex: The other 50% are Duran Duran basslines.

Fleetwood Mac - Tusk: John Mcvie is another big one for me. Dude always knows the perfect part to play and when to just chill and let all the other awesome members of the mac do their thing.

Nomeansno - Rags And Bones: 70s funk bassline played with 80s hardcore abandon, one of my go to sound check riffs.

The Stooges - Dirt: Another soundcheck fave of mine. I love when Robin starts playing along and we lock in and he doesn't even realise he's playing a Stooges song.

Dillinger Four - Let Them Eat Thomas Paine: Paddy just makes me wanna punk the fuck out.

Rage Against The Machine - Bombtrack: Rage were one of the first bands that taught me the bass is just as important as guitar. Mad groove.

Dead Kennedys - Let's Lynch The Landlord: Classic punk basslines. Dead Kennedys taught me how to play fast.

Stevie Wonder - I Wish: The perfect funk bassline.
